Public trust. Public Engagement. Publicly funded research. They are all connected but how strong are these connections? The public frequently hears from academic “experts” but are these academic experts listening to the public? Public engagement is emerging as a new role for researchers creating demands on research administrators for support of public engagement. This is driven in part by the relationship between public engagement and a growing global research impact agenda. The perspectives of researchers and research administrators will drive reflections on and questions about how we might maximize the impact and hence public benefit of research.
