World University Rankings are a ubiquitous feature of the Higher Education landscape and are very much focused on a university’s research performance rather than their teaching or enterprise activities. The influence of World Rankings on the perceived prestige of a university and its subsequent funding opportunities is significant and appears to be growing. However, many criticise the methodologies used by the Rankings and question whether their influence is disproportionate to their rigour. These issues are often debated, but this session seeks to go one step further and discuss what the University Research Community can practically do in response to these issues: should we embrace, avoid or seek to change the World University Rankings? This session, sponsored by the CWTS Leiden, will present the views of both ranking organisations and research managers and will culminate in a discussion around what our next steps might be as a global community of research managers and administrators.
