Being a competitive researcher requires strategic skills and mindset both in relation to the organisational strategies and in the approach to the funding agencies, collaborators and own career development. In our experience such strategic mindset and skills are best developed by using the researcher’s need for funding as starting point. We have developed a funding strategy tool that links the strategy and tactics of research proposals with strategy and tactics in funding at individual, group and institutional level. The tool aims at both enabling the researcher to write better proposals, but also in seeing him/herself as part of a bigger game.
